Speak up E2: Masks Living with Hearing Loss in a Pandemic

After a successful launch of the Speak Up Podcast, two weeks ago, our summer students have produced, episode two: Masks: Living with Hearing Loss in a Pandemic!

Let’s be real, masks are truly the bane of our existence. Even though they do save our lives, the majority of masks that are sold in bulk are masks that cover the mouth, making it impossible for us who have hearing loss to understand the conversation.

Not only it muffles sound and prevents lip reading, masks also interfere with hearing assistive devices, such as hearing aids and cochlear implants.  But that is just the tip of the iceberg.

In this episode, the team share their unfortunate experiences of having to deal with putting on and removing their masks in public,  the fear of going out by themselves in public, the feeling of neglect from the government not considering accessibility issues with mask mandate, as well as exploring the rising significance of masks in our future.
