However, for most people the idea of a New Year has lost its charm due to overwhelming stress, crippling fears, and real feelings of loss as the pandemic continues for yet another year with no end in sight. This is especially true for people with hearing loss as this has been yet another time in their lives when they feel disconnected from society due to mask mandates and other policies that together make it more difficult to be in touch with their family and friends. As a result, it can create a degree of loneliness.

Despite experiencing the yo-yo of lockdowns and reopening plans, Canadians have been trying their best to maintain communication with loved ones and peers both online and in-person, if possible, through fun games and activities. However, due to the constraints of the pandemic (masks and video calls), most of these games/activities can be difficult to participate in if you are a person with hearing loss.

That’s why I’m compiling a list of in-person and virtual games and activities that all Canadians with hearing loss can participate in this year.

Karaoke – in person

Music is one of the greatest social unifiers as it brings people together for a great time of singing and dancing. It is also one of things that everyone can experience, even if they may have severe hearing loss. From just enjoying the music itself without having to understand the lyrics, to even enjoying the vibrations that music creates when blasted from a base speaker.

This is why for the first activity of this list, I’m promoting the now popular South Korean originated activity, Karaoke. In case you’re unfamiliar, Karaoke is where a person or group takes turns singing their favorite songs using a microphone. While most people join/host karaoke house parties and attend karaoke bars during the Christmas holidays due to the amount of Christmas songs that exist, they can be a fun activity on any regular weekend. What makes this activity fun is that it gets everyone to show off their talents, regardless of if they sing like an angel or a scratchy record, it’s all good, silly fun. The cool thing about Karaoke is that it is designed to be accessible for persons with hearing loss. While a group may be able to pick a song they know by heart, not everyone knows the lyrics, and sometimes even if they know the song, there is a chance that they might have misheard the lyrics. As a result, there is always video with built in captions for everyone to sing-along.

Even though I have participated in a few Karaoke parties over the course of my life, it took me this past Christmas to realize just how accessible the format is.

Non-Musical Chairs – in person

Continuing with the musical theme, I would like to suggest an edited version of the famous children game musical chairs for those who have children and need an activity for them. Even though it’s a game that is popular at children’s birthday parties, I know a few young adults who would still play the game, after all it’s the competitive spirit that gets everyone shrieking with laughter. Now you might be wondering how this works since music is an essential part of the game as it indicates when everyone is to walk around the chairs or to try to steal one.

Well back in 2018, I was the games coordinator for a hearing loss Christmas party hosted by the local school board and had to be creative with it as I knew musical chairs is a popular game. In the end I turned to using a visual cue to indicate when to go or when to stop. The cue in question was simply spinning my index finger over my head for GO and raising my palm for STOP. In hindsight perhaps using different colored flags would have been easier. But of course, it doesn’t matter what the visual cue is, as long as the participants understand it, they can play the game. Out of the several games I hosted that day, everyone wanted to play this game, even the adults came over to watch and cheer them on like it was the Superbowl.

Pictionary -Telephone virtual/in person

I think I can speak for the entire hearing loss community when I say that we despise the game of broken telephone. The game is based on how sometimes we miss quote others and end up saying nonsense at the end of the day. While it can be a great game for laughs, the goal is to try to keep the original phrase intact. But if you already can’t hear, you know for a fact that the moment it is your turn, you will be the reason for breaking the streak and that can be very traumatizing even if it’s just a game. Sometimes, the intent of the game is to break the chain in the most outlandish way possible, but I personally prefer to protect my already vulnerable esteem by being the one who gives the word first.

Now there is an accessible version of this game that does not require any pitying and it is a game that combines the essence of broken telephone with another visual and accessible game, Pictionary.

Pictionary is a game where there are multiple teams and each team has a person who picks a random word from a deck and has to illustrate it on paper or a whiteboard without saying the word, while their teammates guess. If they fail to guess within a set time, the other teams can get a chance to steal. Already, this game is pretty much accessible for those with hearing loss and can be a fun competitive activity to do on the weekend.

But if you were to combine the two games you will get a Pictionary Telephone. How it works is that you have a flipbook. The first person in line comes up with a word or phrase for the next person to draw. The next person then has a set time to draw it before handing it over to the next person who will have to guess what the word or phrase is. From there, they would write down what they think is the answer and pass it on. This continues until everyone has gone or the group finished the flipbook. At the end of the game, the group gets to laugh as they go through the flipbook and watch it descend into hysterical madness.

Card Games – in-person / virtual

Ah, there is nothing like a fun hand game to pass the time.
