Before now, we have been advocating through providing guides, hosting webinars,\u00a0writing blogs, magazines and running the Mentorship program.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Never before had we hosted a podcast, where we openly discuss hearing loss issues.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Now I know what you are thinking: A\u00a0podcast? How does that work? After all we are the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, hearing loss is in the name.\u00a0Most of our staff and members experience hearing loss, so\u00a0having a podcast \u2013which is mainly auditory \u2013 is a disadvantage to them.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, I believe that with CHHA using a new type of media\u00a0such as podcasting, will show Canadians that\u00a0every aspect of\u00a0society can be accessible, including podcasts.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Individuals with hearing loss or any disability know what it feels to not be able to access a certain part of society.\u00a0For instance, those with wheelchairs can\u2019t access the beach because of the sand clogging their wheels.\u00a0Those who have blindness often find themselves limited in the\u00a0number\u00a0of places they can enter with their guide dogs. And Individuals with hearing loss decide not to\u00a0listen to podcasts\u00a0because they find it difficult to understand without any visual\u00a0references.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, all it takes is proper accessibility and wheelchair users can roll out to the water,\u00a0individuals with blindness can enter any building they wish, and people with hearing loss can enjoy all forms of entertainment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So how can we make podcasts more accessible?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Transcripts\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If there is no visual aspect of the podcast, one of the easiest ways is to have a\u00a0transcript that informs the listener what is being said and at what time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Captioning<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      If there is limited video, captioning is another way to ensure those with hearing loss\u00a0understand what is being said. This can work well great for live podcasts or regular recorded podcasts.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Have a Video or Visual aspect<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Finally, the best way to make podcasts accessible!\u00a0There are two ways to do this:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        The first way is having an actual video.\u00a0This way, viewers will be able to lipread\u00a0and understand the host\u2019s and guest\u2019s\u00a0expression. Additionally, feel like they are a part of the conversation!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        The second way is having a visual aspect. In this version, the podcast is still in a way a podcast, however, there is text,\u00a0photos\u00a0and\u00a0lively animations\u00a0on the screen that relays the important information to the listener.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Now with that said, lets actually talk about\u00a0this podcast,\u00a0because\u00a0I can tell you\u2019re on the edge of your seat.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        On Today<\/span>, <\/span><\/b>CHHA is launching\u00a0the first episode\u00a0\u201cSpeak Up!\u201d hosted by our Summer Students: Catherine\u00a0Dum\u00e9, Jason Lee, and Kaelan Fulford.\u00a0These three university students all experience hearing loss at various severities and have a\u00a0lot to say regarding accommodations in university.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Just as the name suggests, Speak Up is all about advocating hearing loss issues, from accommodations,\u00a0accessibility, mask wearing,\u00a0talking about fun topics such as entertainment,\u00a0Canadian Hearing History, and sharing personal stories in between.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
