{"id":4419,"date":"2020-09-16T13:30:23","date_gmt":"2020-09-16T13:30:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oldsite.chha.ca\/?page_id=4419"},"modified":"2020-10-30T14:53:14","modified_gmt":"2020-10-30T14:53:14","slug":"getting-started","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oldsite.chha.ca\/fr\/mentor-old\/getting-started\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Started"},"content":{"rendered":"[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n<h2>How to Choose a Mentor<\/h2>\n<p>There are some steps to follow in getting started as a mentee in the Online Mentoring Program.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Read the information found under the headings in\u00a0this Mentoring section.<\/li>\n<li>Agree to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oldsite.chha.ca\/mentor\/code-of-conduct-training\/\">CODE OF CONDUCT.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Click on the header\u00a0MENTOR PROFILES below.<\/li>\n<li>Read the various mentor profiles.<\/li>\n<li>Decide which one appeals to you \u2013 best suits your current needs.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the button you will see in the lower left side of the Mentor profile page. This will send an automatic email to the mentor to know you are interested in having them as your mentor.<\/li>\n<li>The mentor will then contact you from the chat room site and instruct you what to do next. What was mild as a child, and moderate as a teenager is now severe to profound as an adult. I have worn hearing aids since age 20, and this year received a cochlear implant on the right side, effectively becoming bimodal.<\/p>\n<p>At the age of 40, expecting a child, I reached out for the first time to other people with hearing loss. I was worried about how hearing loss would impact my baby\u2019s safety and wellbeing. At a hearing loss conference, I met a hard of hearing mom with a six month old baby (her 4th), and she calmed my fears and changed my life.<\/p>\n<p>I became very involved in hearing loss advocacy \u2013 it has been my career and my volunteer passion. I served on the Boards of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association at both provincial and national levels and became a certified speechreading instructor. I am a public speaker and writer on hearing loss issues, writing a weekly blog for www.hearinghealthmatters.org and published a book The Way I Hear It: A Life with Hearing Loss.<\/p>\n<p>My life with hearing loss and my training has given me a deep understanding of the issues, challenges and frustrations that all people with hearing loss face, as well as the many strategies that can help us regain good communication. As a young girl, I was diagnosed with moderate-severe hearing loss, and I have sought advice from an audiologist more than any other health professional.<\/p>\n<p>My experiences accepting my own deafness, coping with communication challenges, and ultimately wearing bilateral hearing aids shape a big part of who I am today. I have learned that hearing impairment should not make a person any less capable of interacting with the world. I believe that through this experience I can empathize with others through this uniquely individual journey.<\/p>\n<p>By trade, I am a registered nurse working in a busy emergency department, which I have done for the last seven years.
