The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA) is pleased to offer Let\u2019s Talk, a small group speech reading and communication strategies course that helps people with hearing loss &#8211; and their families &#8211; to communicate better![\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5727&#8243; img_size=&#8221;500&#215;500&#8243;][vc_toggle title=&#8221;   What is Speechreading&#8221;]Most people with hearing loss use visual cues to help them understand the spoken word. Speechreading involves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Watching the lip, jaw, tongue and teeth movements of the speaker.<\/li>\n<li>Facial expressions, gestures, postures and movements which help convey speaker\u2019s meaning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Knowing the topic and context.<\/li>\n<li>Good vision. With normal vision, it is possible to speechread up to twenty-four feet but five feet is the ideal distance from the speaker(s).<\/li>\n<li>Emotional resilience to stay confident and committed to good communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=&#8221;Why should I take a speechreading course?&#8221;]\n<ul>\n<li>Increased understanding of hearing loss issues.<\/li>\n<li>Help hearing aids and other technology do their job.<\/li>\n<li>Develop a range of troubleshooting strategies to deal with challenging situations.<\/li>\n<li>Share ideas with other people who have hearing loss.<\/li>\n<li>Become a better communicator!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Speechreading helps put people with hearing loss back in the conversation.
